Several things can make the fuel in the tank to hot. I did not intend to put this thing in service as a DD, but other vehicle issues have forced me to drive it for a little while. Did not see anything obvious when I replaced the valve cover gaskets. I know there is a tapping on the passenger side, probably a valve on Cyl 3. They are getting spark, but something else has been wrong since I got it. I know that I can unplug plug wires on Cyl 2 and 3 and there is no response from the engine. It is not running in top condition, but it was not doing this in the past when I drove it to work or on other little trips. I know the carb probably needs a rebuild as the throttle sticks a little. The fuel pump was supposedly replaced by the PO (and looks like a new one). Even after it does this, I can pull off and it will sit there and idle. I shut it down, sit for 2-3 minutes, and it is fine to get me the rest of the way to work. I basically have to slow down to about 35mph and play with the throttle until I get to an exit and pull off. Then it suddenly starts spitting and spuddering, backfiring through the exhaust, and I have to feather the throttle to keep it running. It runs long ok (meaning as well as it has since I bought the dang thing.) until I get about 10 miles down the interstate (through town first). In the last week or so, my 78 has developed a complex.
